Why Trump’s tariff on Metal means you need to import from China

In January 2018, all of our Canadian clients thought Trump’s fight against metal imports from China means they can’t get competitively priced metals from China anymore.

Interestingly enough, the opposite has happened. Trump’s trade war with Canadian metal producers means the supply of raw metal to North America has decreased significantly. The drop in supply drove up metal prices and lead times for domestic Canada metal suppliers.

However, metal supply from China was unaffected, thus price and lead time remain competitive compared to Canadian suppliers. This is the perfect opportunity for Canadian firms to import metal from China as a solution.
